PCI – Primary Health Care Informatics

Chair:

Main Objectives

The group aims to be a focus for people to from a primary health care background, or conducting research into primary care to come to EFMI conferences. We aim to put on events, generally workshops at EFMI meetings and use the outputs from these to create a submission to the following years IMIA Yearbook for Medical Informatics. We work in close collaboration with national and the IMIA primary care working groups.

  • The aim of the group is to promote and develop primary care informatics as a specialism within health informatics [1].
  • The group aims to put on workshops, and where feasible visits to primary health care facilities, at EFMI conferences.
  • Increase the peer review primary health care informatics literature.
  • Our three current themes are: (1) How to model research studies based on routinely collected data [2]; (2) Ontologically rich approached to case finding in routine data [3]; (3) Developing linked ethics and privacy frameworks.  (4) Methods for the direct observation of the use of technology in the clinical consultation [4]..

Primary Health Care Informatics Working Group aim and objectives for the meeting:

Aim:

The aim of the primary care informatics working group (PCIWG) workshop will be to understand the potential benefits and possible unintended consequences of the technologies being presented in the Village of the Future.  Additionally, we will explore the potential impact of these technologies on the content of the computerised medical record – its volume, content and scope – as these technologies are introduced.

Objectives:

  1. To learn from the experience from and WG members how have experience of innovative practice in the five pillar areas: (1) Technological Interoperability, (2) Semantic Interoperability, (3) Human Factor Engineering, (4) People’s Priorities and Expectations, and (5) Societal Incentive Framework.  WG members will be invited to submit two PowerPoint slides about a cutting edge area of informatics.
  2. Critically appraise the demonstrations available in the Village of the Future: What are the benefits for primary care, what might be the unintended consequences.  Volunteers will be asked for in advance of the workshop to explore each theme/pillar.
  3. Seek example outputs from each theme/pillar how might these have greatest impact on primary care in the future.  In particular:  What types and volume of data and information might be generated that might need to be stored in practice or locality computerised medical record systems; What types, and content of data might be provided direct to patients or be placed in personal electronic health records?
  4. Plan dissemination activities, in particular the working group’s contribution to the Yearbook of Medical Informatics, and a paper in Informatics in Primary Care.

Recent Activities

  • We are planning a workshop at the EFMI STC in Cardiff September 2022.  Please contact Simon de Lusignan simon.delusignan@phc.ox.ac.uk for more details.
  • Workshop focus groups joint with IMIA Primary Health Care Working Group – the outputs is published in the IMIA working group.
