About the Member Society
The German Association for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology (GMDS) is an independent scientific and medical professional society. Its scope covers the fields of medical informatics, medical biometry, epidemiology, biomedical informatics and systems biology in research, education, and practice.
The GMDS is the only scientific organisation in this field in Germany and as such the official national representative within EFMI and IMIA. It closely cooperates with several professional German organizations such as the German Association of Medical Informatics Professionals (BVMI), the German Informatics Society (GI) and the German Technology and Methods Platform for Networked Medical Research (TMF). GMDS was founded in 1955 and is with approximately 2,000 members one of the largest scientific societies in this field in the world.
A central objective of GMDS is to foster research and scientific exchange across disciplines. It provides a platform for collaboration among experts from academia, healthcare, and other relevant sectors. To carry out its mission, GMDS is structured into thematic working areas, sections, and groups that address both methodological and applied challenges in an interdisciplinary manner.
GMDS is also involved in scientific publishing in its fields. Contributions from its disciplines are published in dedicated journals, including the German-language journal Medizinische Informatik, Biometrie und Epidemiologie, which is available via the open-access platform GMS (German Medical Science). Accepted full paper contributions to the annual national congress are published in the IOS Press Studies in Health Technology and Informatics: German Medical Data Science series.
