About the Member Society
The GMDS, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Medizinische Informatik, Biometrie und Epidemiologie (German Association for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology) is the only scientific organisation in this field in Germany and as such the official national representative within EFMI and IMIA. It closely cooperates with three professional organisations: the German Association of Medical Informatics Professionals (Berufsverband Medizinischer Informatiker (BVMI)), the German Association for Professionals in the Field of Medical Documentation (Health Information Management) (DVMD), and the German Informatics Society (Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. (GI)). GMDS was founded 1955 and is with more than 1900 members one of the largest scientific societies in this field in the world.
The basic structure of the GMDS consists of four divisions (medical informatics, medical biometry, epidemiology and medical documentation), with a wide variety of working groups. The management board of the GMDS is led by its president (Professor Mansmann, Munich). The full structure of the GMDS and its work is described in www.gmds.de.
The GMDS issues a national scientific journal: Medizinische Informatik, Biometrie und Epidemiologie., The articles are published in GMS German Medical Science online:www.egms.de/en/journals/mibe/index.shtml. The international journal of GMDS is “Methods of Information in Medicine (MIM)”; individual members of the GMDS have online access to the scientific content of the journal.
Besides a spring congress on Health Information Systems and a number of working conferences, the GMDS annually organizes one large national meeting with about 900 to 1500 participants. The 2016 GMDS congress was held in Munich as part of HEC 2016, which hosted MIE 2016 as well. The 2017 congress will be held in Oldenburg, (Sept. 17th-21th; www.gmds2017.de). All national congresses have been published in proceedings volumes (www.egms.de/static/en/meetings/index.htm).
As education is a main concern of GMDS, it has published a national strategic plan for education in medical informatics as well as for medical biometry. The GMDS is also actively involved in the definition of the medical curriculum and of the content of CME for physicians and for certified further professional qualification of medical informaticians, biometricians, epidemiologists and medical documentalists.
